I started driving later in life, and was over 30 when I got my first car. It was a sensible Mazda 3 — reliable wheels to get me from Point A to Point B but nothing worth flashing on social media.

When I became a Vice President at my company at 32, my husband encouraged me to consider buying a car that better reflected my status.

To save cost, we looked at second hand cars — there was the black Mercedes and the blue Audi A3 sport.

But ultimately, at even a fraction of the full retail price, I couldn’t bring myself to commit to a lease payment in the ballpark of $1,000. Not to mention, I was too scared to even test drive these cars, never having driven anything other than the aforementioned trusty Mazda 3.

My husband joked that people that reported to me drove better cars than I did. It was true. Many of my relationship managers drove BMWs and Mercedes’ but I was never embarrassed when I rolled up in my vehicle. All the money that remained in my bank account at the end of the month made it worth it.
