When you’re pregnant, you’re solely responsible for caring for the baby growing in your belly. It’s all about you — how you are and whether you’re feeling well. You are encouraged to eat healthy and take care of yourself. Even at work, people go out of their way to help you. They remind you not to overexert yourself. After all, you’re growing life.

Things change when you come home with the baby. The focus shifts. Now it’s about the child — they are the delicate ones requiring attention. It’s new life with new organs, just learning to breathe and relate to the world around them. If you’re breastfeeding, you’re still solely or primarily responsible for nurturing your newborn. But once that baby is off your breast, you melt into the walls, invisible.

When friends and family call, they’re only interested in seeing your baby.

They may ask you how you are, but it’s an afterthought. After all, the baby is way cuter. They’re a new member of your family. Everyone wants to meet them.

Meanwhile, you may be struggling through baby blues or even postpartum depression. But you’re a mom and baby comes first and you don’t want to pull focus. Your whole energy is directed towards keeping your…
